I am going through a bit of a British phase in my life…
I could blame it on God reawakening an old love through my current addiction to BBC on YouTube. I love a show on YouTube called “Escape To The Country.” The program features beautiful English houses with large country kitchens which sometimes have the added bonus of a Larder. I love the word larder! It appeals to my country upbringing. It brings me a sense of satisfaction to have a full larder, because going to town is a once a week affair, not an everyday thing. By the way, larder is an old fashioned word for pantry.
The idea of a larder appeals to my sense of longing for abundance. My kind of abundance is not what the average American would consider abundance. I love a pantry overflowing with goodness, so I can make nice meals. I am going to include my freezer as part of the larder as well. I hate being out of anything!!!!! So I usually have one or two extra of everything!!!! Below is a list of things I keep on hand in the larder, and a reason to have it on hand.
Balsamic vinegar, Apple cider vinegar, Red Wine vinegar, and Rice wine Vinegar– These are the basis for salad dressings, sauces, and wonderful condiments
Spices– I buy in bulk because I use them frequently, plus I have a sister who works at a spice house
French sodas– because you should always have a nice beverage to serve guests
Sparkling water– to make spritzers
Coffee– because when it is on sale, stock up!
Tea– because I make Kombucha
Chocolate– because I am a woman
Coconut oil, and Coconut– to bake with
Peanut Butter– because I love it!!!!
Flour-baking and bread baking
Chocolate Chips– baking
Brown Sugar, Sugar, Coconut Sugar– baking, Kombucha
Jams– because I have a weakness for European jams and jellies
Pastas and whole tomatoes– because when all else goes wrong, you can always make spaghetti
Artichokes, olives, jarred roasted peppers, pickles– because you can make so many good things from them
Toilet Paper– YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH!!!!
Plastic bags, aluminum foil, plastic wrap– because I hate to run out
Pita chips, corn chips– because hummus and salsa are so easy to make
Bottled lemon and lime juice– because I never have fresh citrus when I need it
Butter– because it is the best!!!!!
Lard– because it is the best too!!!!
Rice, grits, and canned beans– because I can make a meal out of them quickly, and my because my Mother is from Louisiana
Baking Soda, and White Vinegar– because that is what I clean with
Dijon mustard, Ketchup, Thai chili sauce, Soy sauce, Fish sauce, Barbecue sauce- because you need Dijon mustard to make dressings, I love the Asian Market, and Aldi now has an Organic line
All these things are at the ready to make a host of foods from all over the world, and it is all at hand, in the larder. Happy cooking!!!!!
